soid, as he stared at the mirror, "Now walk back and invite your partner. Act like the other boys. Learn to be brave. Now, go back." So he got back to the drawing-room and approached the girl he had early intended to ask.
May I have the honour to, eh, dance with you?" 'he asked as if giving a recitation.
The girl replied half-snilingly, "Certainly". Don walked with the girl to the middle of the floor and he felt very happy for it was not so difficult after alt, to invite a girl to dance. But just as they held their hands and started to dance, the music stopped. Poor Don. He just stood there like the Statue of Liberty, staring at his partner's eyes.
•
Well, shall we dance afterwurde?" She suggested and before Don nodded his head, she returned to har seat, leaving Don still standing on the floor, as if. rooted to it. A little later, after the shock had worn off, he quickly rushed back to his own seat.
"Did you enjoy your dance?" asked Dick when he got back.
"What dande?" replied Don. "I didn't dance at all. "What were you doing all that time you were not on your seat?" Dick was curious,
"I was," Don, leaning forward and cupping his- hands over his mouth, whispered, "in the toilet."
"What?" Dick almost shouted, and started to laugh but he did not laugh long for he realized the music *was about to begin and this time he was going to get
the girl who first caught his attention before the other boys did, and even if he had to dash across the room to get her, he certainly would. Dick was one of those who believed that if he had the will to anything, there would be a way for him to succeed. The word
failure," he once told his friends, "doesn't exist. in my dictionary." And in later life, Dick's success was largely due to this firm belife of hịs, Dick. could not be described as a stubborn boy if stubborn were to derry a derogatory sense, but when he decided to achieve his object no one could be more stubborn than he
Thus, when the music began to play Dick stood up, and this in fact surprised everybody a great deal and no less Don, who did likewise. Dick did not even wait to find out what the dance was. He walked to the girl, and as he bowed, bia right hand swept across the intervening space between the girl and him, while his left hand was held at his back,
Don, on the other hand, was very successful this time. He walked up to the same girl and invited her. They started dancing although every now and then Don had to apologize to her when he stepped on her shoe, for his nervousness was not completely overcome yet.. Dick was delighted to find that his new partner stood up to his eye level, and she was more attractive than he at first thought. Dick's first impression of her was that of a demure girl, but he soon found that she was also a girl of amiable manners, although she was not too affable at the beginning, perhaps typical of most Chinese girls who were not totally westernized, and were rather conservative. As Dick held her hands, which were small and tender, in contrast to his which were massive and rough, she looked at Dick and said softly, "Is it a slow-waltz?"
"Yes, it is," Dick replied a little nervously, and tried to smile, and added "I didn't know your voice is as pretty as your appearance."
"Very complimentary of you to say so", she gave. a gentle smile which made Dick feel rather uneasy for if he was not entranced her, he would have consult a psychiatrist.
"Do you like the music?!! she asked when found- that Dick was speechless...
"Eh, you mean the present music?" Dick look at her eyes and noticed that unlike the previous girl with whom he had danced, she had not worn any false eye-lashes, and yet her eyes were bright and sharp and they certainly belonged to an intelligent girl. She nodded...
