Account for the downfall of Louis Philippe's Bourgeois monarchy?,
The July Revolution of France saw the overthrow of Charles X whose despotic rule was hated by the people Louis Philippe was chosen by the middle clas people who thought that he would promote their interests and he was thought to be a liberal sinas he had been professing liberal ideas for the mast years. His reign was a period of increasing opposition to him until even the middle class who had elected him was against him, Louis's reign attempted to establish the rule of the Bourgeoigit as a "golden meana" between ultraiam and republicadism. It was because Louis Philippe did not go far enough to reconciliate his people, Liberalism was on the rise, but he could hardly keep pace. Though interested in commerce to promote prosperity, he was blind to liberty in its true sense and failed to carry out any important measures of liberal reform. He was not much liberal in practise than the restored Bourbons, Louis XVIII and Charles X, but the latter, the Franch people had already been convinced not to trust any more. Thus, a closer look At his reign showed that it was indeed "an aristocratic creation with a democratie appearance" Because his policies failed to satisfy the different political parties, he was very unpopular in Francs.
When he came to the throne, the Charter of 1815 Has revived to make it more democratic and certain rights am freedom were granted to the people, but nevertheless, the franchise was still a narrow one, for it did not include the lower working class, Thun From the beginning Louis Philippe had to face the opposition of the workers. During his reign, there were many parties against him the Borapartists, socialists, Legitimists, Catholics, Liberals and Republicans, each of them with a different motive, The government was corrupt and undemocratic and bribery was common. Nothing was done to ease the condition of the workers, and thus more and more discontent developed among them. From 1830 - 1835 there were six uprisings against him, showing how great was their discontent. Paring his reign, the Napoleonic Legend came into existence. The Napoleonie Empire was glorified and the evils of his reign forgotten Louis Philippe did not realize that tim effect of this was to bring contrast between the " past and present and blindly support it. Thus, há made the French more sensitive to the inglorious reign of the Bourgeois monarchy.
His internal policy was a failure and 167 to more opposition than ever. He mãe the French more passionate for glory but he did not adopt a policy, of adventurous policy abroad. He was wise in some way, for an aggressive policy would lead to opposition of the great Powers, but in this way ne failed to satisfy the Franch passion for glory,
In 1830, the belgian Revolt against Dutch rula broke out, and Louis Philippe supported them and the finally obtained their independence. The Belgians offered the throne to Louis's son, the Duo de Nesoura, but he was afraid of accepting this for nis son, for this would mean reviml of French desire of territorial extent and eventually a german wines Leopold or Saxe Coburg became king, de was oriticised on account of this. Again in 1830, the False had risen against the Czar and- the, Italians against the Austrians and they expected Louis Philippe's help but

The Great Powers tried to stop it by the Convention of Ichéon who gave Mehemet permanent rule at Syria, but called off his campaign, he refused anki defeated when Louis Patlippe withdraw his support for be was not . admitted into the Convention of London. Thus he was criticised for not pursuing the policy which he sat out and gained an ally in the middle East.
From 1840-1848, Quizot was minister, In 1846, the Spanish queen Isabella and her sister were both amarried. It was finally arranged that Iesbella should marry a German prince and her sister to the mes of Louis Philippe, Duc de Montpensier but tha Kesond marriage should take place after the first marriage and after Isabella had son to succeed her, Bus Loula Philippe broke the promise and the
marriages were celebrated on the sann day, from this tim on, the official friendship between Britain and France broke out and Britain's policy was to oppose any union between France and Spain and this brought the middle class against him for they were eager to trade with Britain. At this time, a civil was broke out in switzerland between Catholis and Protestant Cantoms. Louis failed to gain credit for the French Catholic when the Catholic Cantons were defeated. though he gave some help
Thus, increasing opposition arose from ali class of people, even from the middle class who chose him and his sudden fall in 1848 was evidence of the great discontent. Just because Louis Philippe was too partial to the economic interests of the bourgeoisie, he thought too little of the desires.em hopes of the French people as a notion. The failure of Louis Philippe's foreign policy undermined tha very foundation of his regime and was therefore the fundamental reason for his unpopularity. He could gain more support if he embarked a policy of adventure abroad to satisfy the French passion for glory and he might have made more reforms to gain the people's support but he was stubborn to cling to one policy - to maintain peace and to promote interest of middle class. The deadly blow, however dame not from the democratic movements though they kere gaining ground, but from the extreme
Republicans and socialista. The Revolution or 40405 MÁ the work of these groups alone and of only a small part of the population of Paris, His fall was not surprising.
. Digenss the causes of the Tai Ping Reballion?
The tranquillity of the Ching Dynasty at the beginning of the nineteenth century was broken up a series of uprisings and the greatest of them was the Tai Ping Rebellion (1850-1864). Since China depended on an agricultural economy, so economic grievances of the peasantry and the failure of the government to remedy the situation were always the leading factors in rebellions.
For a country as the size or china, berore, the development of modern system of communication, the control of the central government over the mass of people could never extend very far. There were few officials and even with the help of some bodies, termen as extra-political agents, effective control over nrovinces was very difficult. Consequently the chief
minister am the provincial governors weTHEY irresponsible, Instead of trying to improve the aitustion they glossed over the breaking of laws and attempted to assume an appearance of peace. In the southern provinces the distresses were mora acute. The officials collaborated in the opim trade. Thun followed by a quick drain of silver outwarda, The humiliating terms in the Treaty of Nanking after the Opium War (1842) greatly impaired the prestiego of the Manchus, and exposed the inefficiency of the government to the full. Thus the peasants became more restlega.
During the long years or peace and stability, there was a great increase in population, but the agricultural area remained the same. An a -consequence, economic distress followed, prices rose owing to the increasing demand of foodstuff, serious unemployment in handicraft industries became a problem as the purchasing power of the bulk of peasants dropped. All these, together with floms, droughts and famines, which secured frequently in provinces along the Valley of the Yellow River and the langtze, led to an increase in bandits and disorder,
The ideology of the Tai Ping originated in their leader Hung Hsiu-Chuan who mixed soze. religions tanate from Christianity with traditional Chinese ideas. The Christian concept of brotherhood was linked with the brotherhood ideal of Chinesa secret societies. This movement produced a kind of religions and political fanaticism against an alien dynasty as the Manchu. In addition racial theme was made the most of by the rebellions. Hung Hsiu-Chuan too, made use of this theme. The robels kept their hair long in defiance of the manchu government which forced the people to shave their hair,.........
From 1840 to 1850 there was not a single year. without an insurrection. There miner disturbances paved the way for the outbreak of the Tai Ping rebellion in 1850, Many followers of Hung Hsiu-Chuan were indoctrinated by the secret societies with anti-manchu ideas and racialist slogan, Thus, the Tai Ping rebellion was attractive to the rebels as well as appealing so unify the diverse local movement to one formidable force.
This united force, once broke out of control, was too strong for the weak manchu to resist. The Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace was set up in 1853 with its capital in Nanking. It aimed at setting # communistic and theocratic štatë, The Tai Pinz are hailed by Communist China as fore-runners of
socialism. However, the Tai Ping leaders fell into the traditional defects of nepotism and finally they were suppressed by the manchus. Had the rebels kept to their constructive and enlightened reforms, they might be successful in forming a new dynasty, But as things were, they were finally defeated by the regional army of Tsang Kuo-Fanta
