Dairy farming includes the rearing of cattle for milk, hence the production of liquid milk, butter, cheese, and condensed, evaporated or dried milk. Pigs and poultry are often assom ciated as side-linea. The economy of Denmark depends on it to a large extent.

4

Denmark lacks coal and B.2.P. potentials and all other minerals. Thus she could not be- some industrial, but her proximity to Britain and Germany meant that she had good markets for farm produce. Competition from the New World in qereal production and refrigerated mat forced her to concentrate on dairy farming. it lies in the temperate zone, with warm summera and mild winters. Its milk, wet climatic con- ditions encourage the growth of natural pasture and of fodder crops for stall-feeding the ani- mals in vinter. In the west of Denmark, the Geestland is largely covered with poor sandy soils in the form of dunes and bare heaths. This misa has been drained and reclaimed and the poor soils enriched by Sertilisers. Meadows have been sowi with grasses and clover; roots med other fodder crops grown to give stall feed- êng in virter. But Dairying in Denmark is analogous to the large manufacturing industries of western Eureope since it depends to a'large extent on imported, ray materials in the form of cheap foodstuffs for animals and it producma a number of highly atandardised articles' which are expected abrard. Maize and other cattle foods are imported into the country. Butter is made in co-operative creameries, and the skim milk fed to pigs which'are slaughtered and cured for bacon and ham. Chickans are also milk-fed for table use and there is a large export of eggs. The co-operativettechnique is applied to the purchasing or feeding stuffs, the preparas tion as well as the marketing of the produɑs . The regular inspection of herds and the grading of produce are accomplished with a high degree, of efficiency.

Greater parts of the mountains in surma are nevered with broad-leaved hardwood frees. Owing to difficult transpæ t over the swampy ground, the hot, hunžé and unhealthy climate, the distance from consuming centres

in the temperate iande and tas fäet that tro- pical treas occur in mixed stands, commercial

lumbering of hardwood is restricted and largely, confined to areas where timbers are of high #conomia value and, where rivers are available to be usedas transport, means,

On the slopes of the Arakan Yona and other highlanda in Burma facing the central lowland, the lover rainrall of between 40′′ and 60" per year encourages the growth of deciduous monsoon forest which yield valuable hardwooda

such asteak and ironwood. Teak, in spite of its high price, is readily saleable in the market because of its special qualities, Bare, els- phants are trained to lirt the tree-trunks to the river side. The timber is usually built in- to rafts before being floated downstream to the sawmills at Rangoon and Houlmein. The rivers Irrawaddy, Chindwin and Salveen are all impor- tant for the downstream conveyance of timbers which constitute an important export item foN. Burma.

(b) The North-East Pacific Coast is one of the world's chief commercial fishing grounds. It includes the temperate vaters which stretch from Alaska to California in the northern Hemi-- aphers. The area is washed by the North Pacifie Drift in its north and the cool Californian Duzrent in its bouth, Noticeable continental shelves areaþsent, However, the area in very rich in halibut, herrings, cods and sardines.

Apart from see fisheries, salmon-fighing the rivans do very important. Salmon are adromous fish. The fish come up the rivers to apawn, and the young salson move away to the Ocean where they remain till fully grown, then they swim upstream to the spawning-grounds, It is then that they are caught, Rivers in Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and Cali- fornia provide belt of the fish caught in this sree, The Fraser, Columbio, Sacramento, Skeona and many other rivers are full of så non though latal y 'over-fishing' has depleted the stocks. The catob are sent to nearby cannerica ( #.6• Prince Rupert, Vancouver, and New Westminstor, for packing in tins. The tinned salmon is ex- ported Mall over the world. (c) The Borth Atlantic route is the world', most important ocean route. The termini or the route includé sone of the Largest cities: London, Liverpool, Antverp and Hamburg on the Bureopean side and New York, Philadelphia and Boston in America, Hontreal in" Canada is another terminus in summer when the St. Lawrence patie is open and the main North Atlantic route then lies further north doing the short great circle route which passes noth of Newfoundland, There is gore trade in food and raw asterials than in mantractured gods.
