Paper 25
Head through the following passage carefully and answer the questions following it:
Science 18 a common heritage to all mankina, though the leading role in the history of its development has been played by different races at different times. Once it was the Greeks, at another time the Islamic people, then the Europeans, and now the Americans and Russians. By the year 1984 modern science will have wi brought dramatic changes to the livelihood of many Asian people, some of whom are still living under conditions similar to those prevailing during the days of their ancestors & few thousand years ago,
Many more scientists will be produced by universities in Asia, and at the same time nore Asian Balantists trained abroad will return to their homelana. It is impossible to predict any forthcoming contributions of great significance to the fundamental knowledge of Pure seisnes emerging from the minds of scientists in Asia within the next two decades. At any rate it is unlikely that Asia will seriously challenge the leadership of Europe and Americs, although the gap between them will become narrower, One reason is that #cientifically backward countries today generally concentrate on the applied sciences and technology, paying less attention to research into the more fundamental aspects of pure science.
It will be in the fields of applied science and technology that the greatest progress will be made in Asia, By 1984 industrialization will have taken place in many countries, including China, India and Malayala, These countries will require a much shorter time to become industrialized than that which was taken by Europe and North America in the past, they being able to take advantage of the experience gained by their predecessors. Nuclear reactors will be used in many power stations and electronic computers in many
organizations, Electronic equipment will probably be developed and used in hospitals in some countries, such as Japan. Higher-yield and better-quality natural rubber will continue to compete with synthetic rubber. Some Asian countries such as Japan and China will produse their own motor vehicles in large quantities to meet the demands of their home markets. Japan will become one of the pioneers in the production of turbine-motor engines. By the year 1984 Asin will not only be very clões behind Europe and America in the applied soienass - and technology but it will slso become their greatest competitor in the world supply of manufactured gooda and scientific equipment.
However, it is not merely in the fields of science and technology that we are likely to sen startling changes in Asia, Far more important will be the human problems which must accompany advances in science and technology. It is difficult today to make generalizations about changes in the population structure of Asia because Ásia's societies and cultural groups are do diversified. But one thing seems certain: by 1984 the population of Asia will be over two and a half billion, nearly twice the present number; out of every five persons in the world, three will be Asians, Most of the present Asian population are young and sager, at that little declins in the present rate of growth can be hoped for. All facets of Asian life will reflect this huge increase in population which poses the severest challenge to the scientific and social skills of man in the decades to come.
1. unscribe, in less than 105 words, the progress of
pure and applied sciences and technology in Asia oy 1984.
2. How does the author show that science is not the
monopoly of one race or nation?
3. Why is it difficult to make generalizations about
changes in the population structure of Asia?
A. Why can there be little hope for a decline in the
present rate of growth in Asia?
