Chemistry (21)

1. (a) Ammonia is prepared industrially by the Haber

process, Nitrogen and hydrogen are made to combine at 550°C. and under a pressure of 200-1,000 atmospheres. A catalyst, ferric oxide, in used and it is usually mixed with aluminium oxide to act as a promoter. During the reaction the ferric oxide is reduced by the hydrogen to finely-divided iron.

+ 3y = 20,

The actual conditions of temperature and pressure are chosen to give the most economicai yield of ammonis, but the nitrogen and hydrogen are not all used up. For example, yield of 15% is obtained at 550° and 250 atmospheres,

The ammonia is liquefied by cooling and the uncombined nitrogen and hydrogen are re- circulated through the plant.

(b) Almost all nitric acid is now manufactured by

the catalytic oxidation of ammonia, Nitrogen is first converted to ammonia by the Haber Process as described above,

Ammonia gas (106) and air (90% by volume) are passed through a platinum gauze catalyst, kept at red heat (850%.) The ammonia is oxidised to nitric oxide. In modern plants, the platinum may be alloyed with 10% rhodiu

iron to form ferrous nitrate, Fa(NO3)2, oxides of nitrogen and sometimes ammonium nitrate. The reactions are similar to those of dilute nitric acid with copper and zinc.

The nitric oxide 11 then cooled temperature lower than 150°C. and it is then allowed to pass slowly with an excess of air

through an oxidising chamber where it is converted to nitrogen dioxide,

At 150°C. or higher temperatures nitrogen' dipxide dissociates into nitric oxide and oxygen, Consequently, a maximum yield of nitrogen dioxide can only be obtained at a, low temperature.

The nitrogen dioxide, in the presence of excess air, is then absorbed in water at about, 80°C. This avoids formation of nitrous acid (unstable to heat), and enforces the final reactions.

Using about 7.8 atmospheres throughout the process, about 93% yield can be obtained in modern plants, 48 excess water is used; the acid collected is of about 60% concentration:
