33. (a) How does ics erode the land surfacer

(b) Describe the formation of any three of the

common characteristic features in a glaciate upland region.

e) In what ways can a glaciated region be ofị

value to man?

There are two main processes of glacia. erosion: plucking and abrasion. Plucking refers to the pulling away of masses of rock on the valley floor or sides of a glacier, by means of ice freezing on to protuberances and detaching them as it moves on. Plucking is particularly marked in the case of well Jointed racks. As a glacier moves along,

pieces of rock broken off the valley sides fall on to the glacier and become embedded in it. These function as an abrasive medium leading to the mechanical wearing-down of rocks that are in their way. This process of wearing away is termed abrasion,

The three common characteristic feature: in a glaciated upland region are: cirque, arete, hanging valley.

Cirques are steep-sided semi-circular basins of glacial origin high up on mountain slopes. They appear to have acted as collecting grounds for the ice which flow down the slopes į as valley glaciers. A shallow preglacial hollow has been progressivaly enlarged, first by alternate thaw-freeze of a snow-patch within 1, which causes the rocks to disintegrate. Freeze-thaw eats both into the back-wall of the oirque, thus maintaining its steepness, and also into the floor, thus maintaining and emphasizing its basin shape. It also provides debris which freezes into the base of the ice and so acts as an abrasive. It is a common feature in glaciated mountain ranges, often containing a small lake (a tarn).

An arete is a steep-sided rocky ridge, specifying the crest between two adjacent cirques. It is formed by two corries eating backwards from the opposite sides of a mountain...

A hanging valley is a high-lying tributary valley which leads with a marked steepening of slope into a min valley. The stream of this valley joins the main river via a waterfall. There are two entirely different explanations as to its origin. Ühe' group attributes this to the unequal

34. Name two features produced by wind erosion and one]

produced by wind deposition which frequently

oocur in tropical deserts, for each, describa:; (a) its appearance, and (b) its formation. Iliustrate your answer with diagrams.

Kock pedestals and yardangs are produced by wind erosion whereas sand dunes are depositiona) features formed by the same agent.

wind carries a load of dust and sand particles as

it travels. Thus armed, it is able to abrade and polish any obstacle with which it

comes in contact. Wind abrasion is greatest. near to ground level and hard rock is worn away more slowly. Under the orolonged attack of wind abrasion, some rock masses, composed of alternate! layers of hard and soft rock, are sculptured

into fantastic shapes according to the differencss]

in the stroneth of the rock and the strength of the winds. These are called rock pedestals.

Yardinge are marp crests of idee, of roc separated from their parallel ngigpours by shallow groves. The area exhibit a ridge and furrow landscape. They are the revolt of

ifferential erosion in a desert by the scouring effect of sand-lader winds. In an arsa under by bands of herd and soft rocks which lis pr to the prevailing winds, wind abrasion turns belts of soft rocks into troughs whilst the mard rocks are undercut and they stand up as narrow, ridges called yardangs.

excavation by a major glacier a more shallow, and therefore less effective tributary glacier. Consequent to this, the main valley is overdeepened whereas the tributary valley receives little deepening and remains highly perched above the main valley, other group holds that most of the deepening must be

fluvial and that it has occurred during inter- glacial periods. They suggest that in a period of ice-retreat, the main valley was unoccupied by ice whilst the higher parts of the tributary valleys still carried an ice cover and could not be eroded by water. These tributary valleys therefore remained ungraded while the ma in valley was undergoing active erosion,

MBARIES:

A sand dune is a low ridge or hillock of irifted sand, mainly moved and deposited by wind. It is made of sand which has bean piled up against a lump of rock or any other form of obstruation. Once started, the dune itself causes a greater accumulation of sand until the dunes may be several hundred feat high. Sand dunes are not usually stationary. Sand is being constantly blown from the gentle slope of the windward sto and dropped on the steep leeward side. So the dune moves steadily forward. As the ends dune are lower than the centre they love more quickly. This results in the

c) A glaciated region can be of value to man in! may different weye, Firstly, boulder clay deposits are sometimes very fertile, 0.8. East Anglia in Great Britain and parts of the Diary Eelt and Wheat Belt of North America. The siegree of fertility depends largely on the source of origin or the glacial drift. Secondly, old glacial lako beds are invariably fertile. Extensive areas of the Canadien Prairies owe their prosperity to the rich alluviums which once collected on the floors of glacial lakes. Thirdly waterfalls resulting from glaciation can be harnessed for the generation of hydro- electric power. Fourthly, come glacial lakes, such as the Great Lakes of North America, help to regulate the flow of streams and are of real value as natural routeways.
