At the turn of the century, a disillusioned man who had failed at almost everything he had attempted wrote to his sister: "When I was young I Longed to write a great novel that should win me fame. Now that I am getting old my first book is written to amuse childe ren.

For, aside from my evident inability to do anything 'great', I have learned to regard fame as a will-o-the-wisp. but to please

a child is a sweet and lovely thing that warms one's heart."

The man was Lyman Frank Baum, and his best- known book began to take form when a group of children, led by his own four boys, waylaid,

him one evening in his modest home demanding a story. Sitting down with the children surrounding him, he began to talk.

He gave no thought to what he was saying and later wrote in amazement, "The characters surprised even me--it was as though they were living

(15) Useful application of liquid expansi0H

The uniform expansion of mercury is made used in a thermometer to indicate temperature change.

Pendulum clock, if not compensated, will lose time during warm days and gain, in cold weather This is due to the change in length of the metallic rod which serves as a pendulum length. To compensate for this, a set of brass and iron rods is arranged so that the differential- expansion of them will compensate each other. The pendulum length is therefore, kept constant.

a metallic rod.

A square metal plate, each side 10 cm. Long at 0°C, has a circular hole of diameter 40 cm. In the middle of it. At what temperatura will the diameter be 40.4 cm., and what will then be tho. sides of the plate? (Coef. of linear expansión. metal - 0,0000125/deg.CJ).

Explain the term real and apparent as applied liquid expansion.
