Synthetic detergents resemble soaps in structure but have a number of advantages over soaps because they do not form scummy precipitates in hard water
because the calcium and magnesium salts are soluble. In contrast to scaps, synthetic detergents are
equally active as cleansing and foaming (sudsing) agents in hard or soft water.
Synthetic detergents can work in acid or
alkaline solution whereas soaps do not work well in sucb solutions.
Synthetic detergents remove grease more efficiently than soap. They allow water to penetrate the substance being cleansed more deeply and wet the surface more efficiently.

(b) Water is said to be hard when it will not give a lather with soap. Hardness is caused by the presence of soluble calcium and magnesium salts in water. These salts furnish calcium and magnesium ions in solution. Soap is the sodium or potassium salt of a fatty acid of high molecular weight, e.g. sodium stearate, C135000 Na*. The calcium and magnesium ions in water react with such soaps to form a scua, thereby preventing a lather from being formed. 2017H35000′′ Na + Ca

Synthetic zeolites e.g., parnutit are insoluble complex compounds of sodium which çan replace the unwanted calcium and magnesium ions, in the water by sodium ions. The sodium ions present in the seolite are said to be "archar for calcium and magnesium ions in solution, that is it is an ion-exchange material.

(insoluble)
The hard water is passed through a container. packed with a zeolite, such as permutit, which eventually becomes converted entirely into the calcium complex. This has to be regenerated by passing a concentrated solution of sodium chloride through it for some time, and then washing away the calcium chloride which is formed.

(b) a solution of washing soda may be distinguished
from a solution of sodium bicarbonate solution by adding magnesium sulphate solution to each solution. With the washing soda solution, a white precipitate of magnesium carbonate is formed, but no apparent change takes place when magnesium sulphate solution is added to sodium bicarbonate solution, as the magnesium bicarbonate formed is soluble in water.
