different physical· properties, but with the same chemical properties is said to exhibit allotropy, and the different forms are called allotropes .or allotropic forms of the element. For example, sulprive and carbon are two elements which exhibit allotropy.

Q.1(c)Preparation of two crystalline allotropes of sulphur

1) Rhombic sulphur

Put some powdered roll sulphur in a beaker, ado carbon disulphide and stir. When all the sulphur has dissolved, filter and collect the solution in a large watch glass. Cover the solution with another watch glass and put it in a cupboard away from draughts. In this way, the carbon disulphide evaporates slowly, and large crystals of rhombic sulphur will be obtained in the watch glass.

11) Monaclinic sulphur

Fill a crucible with powdered sulphur and heat it very gently until all the sulphur just melts. The molten sulphur is then allowed to coal until a crust is seen to form on the surface. Two holes are immediately pieced in the crust with a nail, and any molten liquid is then poured away, Needle-shaped crystals will be found beneath the crust and on the sides of the crucible. These are crystals of monoclinic or prismatic sulphur.

Preparation of a non-crystalline Allotrope of sulphur. Put some powder sulphur in a test-tube and heat it gently until it first melts to a mobile liquid, then becomes very viscous, and finally becomes mobile

gain. The colour of the liquid is dark-brown, almost black. Pour the liquid sulphur into a beaker of cold

ater. A brown translucent non-crystalline mass, which feels like rubber is formed. This form of sulphur is known as blastic sulphur."

QUESTIONS FOR NEXT WESEK

[1. Give a brief and simple account of the industrial pre- paration of sulphuric acid from sulphur dioxide by the contact process

[2. Describe the preparation or crystals or two different

salts from sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide. 4.88 g. of barium chloride crystals (BaC12-2h20) were dissolved in water. To the solution was added 200 c.c. of a normal solution of sodium carbonate and the preci pitate formed filtered, carefully washed and dried, Calculate (a) the weight of solid obtained, and (b) the volume of N/2 hydrochloric acid which would be required to react with the excess of sodium carbonate in the filtrar's

3. Describe une reactions of sulphuric acid with (1) iron, (1) sodium nitrate, (iii) crystalline copper sulphate, giving the relevant equations and indicating in each case the appropriate temperature and concentration of acid.
