The result of the war was disastrous for China. It revealed her weakness to the rest of the world. Henceforth) foreign powers did not rely on diplomacy for obtaining concessions, but resorted to threats, and to the display oz force, feeling sure that Chine was not in a position to make serious opposition; and there followed a constent succession # of encroachments upon Chinees territory by several European i powers.

Some of the Western powers were aggrieved by Japan's gains in Manchuria. Three of them -- Russia, Germany and France, counselled Japan to relinquish her claim on the Liaotung Peninsula, on the round that her ownership of that strategic togus of land would be a manece to Peking and to the independence of tíorea. japan, seeing back of this "advice7 a thinly veiled threat and being in no position as yet to defy it, acquiesced, but on condition of an additional indemnity,

/ The victory in the Sino-Japanese war marked the beginning of Japanese imperialist expansion. Japan continued to incrozae ner arty and navy and began to prepare for the next conflict which I was to be with Hussin,

year China was forced to give a lease of these to Russia and also the right to link up Fort Arthur by rail through Hanchuria with

the Trans-Siberian railway. Japan thus saw that har rival in the Far East was fussia.

On the other hand, mussia continued to send large forces of i Groupe to Nanchuria and many ships to Port Arthur and Lairen. During the Boxer troubles, Russia had occupied the three provinces of Manchuria. Japan demanded that she withdraw from these provinces, Russia promised she would do so, but did not. Eventually Japan was ready for war and it began in cebruary 1904. In 1902, England had maue an alliance with Japan but she was only bound to help Japan,if Japan were attacked by another country in addition to Russia.
