in the north-east (rising above 150 m.), and another in the south (rising above 250 m.). This arrangement, of highlands leaves a broad strip of lowland, stretching from the north-west to the south-east, The roads and railways of this region avoid going up mountain slopes, and they are found below the 25 metre contour mostly. There is a first-class road running from the north-west to the south-east (from sq. 0494 to sq. 0688), and another running from the west to the east, across the plain (from sq. 0291 to ag. 0691). The railway runs in approximately the same direction as the first road, keeping all the way on the level with negligible gradient. Besides, there is a second-class road going from sq. 0391 to sq. 0288, going up a gentle slope and then down the other side with 1 in 50 gradient. In short, the chief communi- cation of the region is limited to the lowland below, the 50 metre contours.
