ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS GIVEN IN TEST 18.

35. State Faraday's Laws of electrolysis and describe

two experiments to illustrate them.

A steady current passes through a silver voltameter)

and a 10-ohm resistance arranged in parallel;

a high-resistance voltmet..r connected across ti terminals of the 10-ohm resistance reads 6 voles, and 1.5 gm. of silver are deposited on the cathode of the voltameter in 20 minutes. Calculate the resistance of the voltameter. (ECE of silver - 0.001118 am,/coulomb.)

Law I. The weight of a substance liberated at an electrode is proportional to the quantity, of electricity which has passed through the electrolyte. Illustration

Set up a silver voltameter which consists of a silver plate for an anode, a small platinum bowl for the cathode, and silver nitrate inside, the bowl as the electrolyte. The cathoda is cleaned, dried and weighed before the silver nitrate and the anode are put in. The current is then switched on for 10 minutes. Afterwards, the electrolyte is poured off, and the cathode is washed, dried, weighed again. The increase of weight is the weight of silver deposited on the cathode. The above is repeated again allowing the current to pass through the electrolyte for 20 minute this time. The further increase of weight in the cathode is found to be double that of the first. Since the Same current of electricity is passed for double the time, the quantity of electricity must be double the first, thus the weight of silver liberated at an electrode 18 proportional to the quantity of electricity which has passed through the electrolyte.

Law II. The Weights of elements liberated by the same quantity of electricity are proportional to their chemical equivalents.

Illustration

Set up a silver VAL diater 131iver nitrate as electrolyte, silver anode, platinum bowl as cathode) and a copper voltameter (copper sulphate as electrolyte and copper electroded in series. The cathode is first cleaned, dried and weighed, Allow the same current to pass through the two voltameters at the same time. Copper is then deposited at the cathode of the copper voltameter' and silver is deposited at the cathode of the Eliver voltameter. The weights of those elemenE deposited are then found by weighing the cathodes egain. Since the ratio of chemical equivalent of silver (108) to that of copper (31.5) is 3.43, the ratio of the weight of silver deposited to that of copper deposited must be of the same ratio.

36. State Ohm's Law.

Explain the terms electromotive forea. InternaŽ resistance of a cell..

Two Daniel cells, of the same internal resistandă and each having an e.n.f. of 1.1 volts, were joined in series with an ammeter and an unknow. resistance. The ammeter reading was 0.16 amp. When the cells were replaced by an accumulator de.n.f. 2.2 volts) of negligible resistance the Ammeter then read 0.2 amp. Calculate: (a) the

nternal resistance of each of the Daniell cells, and (b) the current in the original circuit if öna..cell had been used..

Ohm's Law -- The current passing through a wire at constant temperatura is proportional to the potential difference between its ends.

Potential Difference . Resistance x Current;

The alsctromotive force of a cell is given in volts and is the sum of the potential differences which it can produce across all the different parts of a circuit in which it is connected including the potential difference used to drive the current through the call. Internal resistance of a cell is that property which exists inside a cell to "resist" the flow of electricity through it. The strength of the current which is obtained from a cell depends on the e,m,f. as well as the internal resistance of the call. In order to obtain a large current, there must be a hích é.m.f, and a low internal resistance
