During the first half of the 19th century,Italy was still disunited and its different parts were ruled despotically. Lombardy and Venetia and some of the central duchies were ruled by the Austrian; the States of the Church (including Rome) were governed by the Pope; Sardinia, including the north-western corner of the mainland and the island of Sardinia, was the only Italian State independent of foreign control. It finally led to liberty and union and this was due mainly to the work of three outstanding. personalitiea: Mazzini, Cavour and Garibaldi.
Tae inspiration or the movement or unity first "cane, from Mazzini who became obsessed by the sorrows of his country. He early joined the Carbonari, and was arrested during the disturbances in 1830. When he was released, he immediately set himself to educate all Italiana 'to a sense of their common nationality, ́and to inspire them to achieve the political unity. In 1831, hè founded a society called "Young Italyn. The "Young Italians" devoted themselves to spreading the ideas of liberty and unity and to enrolling members pledged to attain those dbjects. It was this secret. society which provided the motive power for the revolution of 1848 'in Italy, which although seemed. to be a dámmal failure, yet did strengthen the desire for national unity and liberal government.
as soon as Cavour became Sardınma's prime minister and minister of foreign affairs in 1851, he concentrat- ed on one object----to expel Austria from Italy as the first step towards uniting the peninsula under his master's rule. He had confidence in his people and in himself. He shaped Sardinia's government after England's and laboured unceasingly to improve the financial and military resoutes of the little kingdom. He realized that Sardinia must have foreign aid to defeat. Austria and to unite Italy. Accordingly.
·he caused Sardinia. to join France and England in the Crimean War in 1855, The Italian soldiers did well, and at the peace congress in Paris (1856) he set forth. the miseries of Italy, also the misrule of Austria; by so doing, Italy had won England's sympathy and friendship with France. In 1859 Austria, being aroused by military. preparations in Italy, declared war on Sardinia. Alded by Louis Napoleon, the Sardinians defeated the Austrians at Magenta and Solferino. By the peace of 1860, Sardinia held Parma, Modena, Tuscany, Romagna and Lombardy, Austria still retained Venetia, Trent, and Trieste.
It was by this time when Garibaldi began to play his important part. Garibaldi joined the "Young Italy" in its earliest days. During the campaign with Austria in 1859, he and his one thousand "Red Shirts" had achieved great success, When revolta broke out in Si- cily in that same year, this thousand immediately set "out to support. The Garibaldians soon took Palermo,
then crossed to the mainland and began to march towards Naples, His next thought was to press on to Romerand defeat the Pope. Up to this point, Cavour interfered; he saw that a step further would endanger the whole situation. Cavour's solution was that the Sardinian. king ahould be in- Rome first. By a master stroke of diplomacy Cavour obtained the permission from France that the Sardinian troops could march in the Papal States, provided Rome, itself was untouched. (Napoleon III remained neutral in any attack on Rome.) By the end of 1860, the Sardiniane had conquered the Papal: States. In 1861, Victor Emmanuel became the first king of Italy, with only Venetia and Rome outside a united Italy.

3. Give an account of the struggle for German unity
between 1848 and 1871.
When revolutions broke up in France in 1648; the Liberals and Nationalists in Germany, also demanded a National Parliament and many other reforms. A Convention met, drew up a Constitution; but all these were rejected by Frederick Williams as soon as the revolts in Austria were suppressed. In short, nothing was achieved in the unification of Germany in 1848. In 1871, however, Germany managed to prclaim ite unification both in form and in spirit: this was main- ly due to the work of one man----Bisnéṛck、
Biemark entered politice in 1947; he was highly aristocratic and conservative and distrustful to all liberal ideas. He thought that the elements of 1848 ought to be quenched, all except that of nationalism of which he made use as a means to his end to unite Germany under the leader of Prussia. His chance came in 1862 when he was appointed Prime Minister. From 1862 to 1866 he ruled without Parliament and engaged. himself in strengthening the Prussian army through various military reforms. He realized that the best way to unite a disunited country was a foreign war. For this reason, he plunged Germany into three wars within six years. Tolaccomplish unification, Prussia had to win over the other German States and also had to defeat Austria.
The first war took place in 1864 against Denmark. In 1863 the new king of Denmark joined Schleswig- Holatein to Denmark. Bismark persuaded Austria to join in a war against Denmark. He wished to try out the reorganised Prussian army, to observe the strength of the Austrian army, and to show that Prussia was
a leader among the German States. (Holstein was a member of the German Confederation.) Denmark was defeated and Schleswig and Holstein were placed
, under the protection of Prussia: and Austria respectively.
Bismarckwished both Schleswig and Holstein to become provinces of Prussia, But Austria, supported by other German states, wanted them to become inde- pendent members of the German Confederation. Prussia called on Austria to withdraw from Schleswig. Austría refused and war, began in 1866, Austria was supported by other German States, but could only resist the well- trained Prussian army for seven weeks. By the Treaty of Prague, Prussia became mistress of Germany and Austria withdrew from the German Confederation,
Bismarck now wanted a wat with France and it `did break out because of a dispute over the succession to the Spanish throne. In 1868, a revolt broke out in Spain and the reigning monarch, Isabella II, was dethroned. Spain was nominally a Republic, but the people hoped for a constitutional monarchy. So the Parliament offered the crown to Prince Leopold who was a member of the Hohenzollern family. France opposed to this arrangement for she would then be surrounded by states ruled by members of the same family. France asked Prussia to stop this. Napoleon III even sent his Ambassador to approach William I at Ems. From Ems, William sent a telegram to. Bismarck who published it on the German and French newspapers. It appeared that the French had been insulted by the Germans and the
Germans by the French. As a result, the famous Franco- Prussian War was declared in '1870. Germany was well supported by the Southern German States and had a well-trained army; France was lack of foreign support and her army was inefficient and not mobilised. The, French were driven out of Alsace and Lorraine; Paris had to surrender after a siege, of four months. Germany was at last united when King William of Prussia was crowned Emperor of Germany in, 1871.
