With reference to despatch No 11 of the 27th ult., reporting the trial of John Tarrant for a libel on Col. Caine, and the sentence passed on him,
I have to inform you that representations have been made to me in this country from various quarters, some of them entitled to consideration, to the effect that Mr. Tarrant is likely to suffer materially by this conviction.
