BIG DECREASE IN FREIGHT

VERY POOR RETURNS MADE.
Although a similar number of arrivals were recorded in yesterday's shipping. statement as in the previous period, there was a decrease in tonnage and freight Teturns made were very poor, and of thead British vessals figured best, carrying most of the Hongkong cargo and all the freight for ports beyond. Hongkong cargo decreased by over 1,000 tons, while freight for parts beyond, fell by over 5,000
tons.

TONNAGE "AND NATIONALITIES.
The tonnage figures were as under:- Total: 8,663 tons; British yessels: 6,378 tons; Other vessels: 9,985 tons.
SHIPPING NOTES.
At the Marine Court yesterday, befare Lieutenant-Commander G. F. Hole, R.N., the master of the steam-launch Wilke, was fined 83, or five days' hard labour in default, for allowing his launch to be on the outside of two other launches
alongside the as. Angers.
Also at the Marine Court, a junk maater was fined $10, or ten days' hard labour in default, for failing to exhibit regulation lights while under way. The bail of $15 of another junk master. ! charged with the same offence, was estreated on his failure to appear in Court
The master of the s.s. Taiping (British) from Melbourne and Manila, reported to the Harbour Office yesterday that one Chinese steerage passenger died during the voyage.
The total number of deck passengers entered for the twenty-four hours ended at mm. yesterday was 332, of which the s.s. Taiping (British) from Melbourn and Manila carried 112, and the 8.8. Kaying (British) from Singapore and Hoihow 150.
At 9 am, yesterday there were 45 vessels in the harbour, of which were British. During the previous 24 hours sever vessels arrived, e, three British ene Japanese and three Chinese. The departures dur ing the same period numbered eleven, vit, one British and one. Chinese for

The Taku Tug & Lighter Co., Ltd. have contracted with the New Engineering. and Shipbuilding Works, Ltd. of Shang- hai for the building of two large general cargo lighters of a deadweight capacity of about 600 tons each, to be fitted with all the latest equipment for, the rapid handling of cargo, also a specially con- structed lighter to carry benzine in bulk of a deadweight capacity of 450 tons, these craft should all be ready for work in the early spring of next year. It is stated that the bulk, beenzine lighter is the first of its kind in China and will enable large steamers to bring bulk ben- zine for discharge at the Taku Bar. The Taku Tug & Lighter Co., Ltd are to he congratulated on their enterprise in assisting the development of this ever increasing trade.
