THE EXGINEER'S PRAISE. *
It is entirely contrary to the whole principle of the laws of England, and the Pest Ofter must be taught that they are phly a branch of the public service.
When the scheme for Sydney Harbour and that they have got no rights that bridge and the big underground railway are not common to other prosecutors. system was finally agreed on by Parlin That is the view express, and I express men: Miss Butler was the first officer an it strongly. It is the practice I shall pointed to the department created to insist on in this Court. I have more deal with these two great engineering than once been told by counsel of emin. projects. She was appointed on her ence in the most, polite language, Your merits and because she had mastered all lordship thinks so and so, but we don't, sorts of intricate technical matters of and those who justructed us don't. I won't say determined. but largely determined, by the opinion of the Judiciary. The judiciary are to be free and independent, and I will not allow this practice to go on, if I can help it, until I am told I am wrong. The argu- ment that a dishonest man might still be, in the employment of the Post Office is not potent enough to prevent me doing all I can to see that the confiden. tial relationship between spouses shall be protected. I desire my remarks to be brought to the attention of the Post- master-General and any authorities that have anything to do with the administru- tion of Post Office justice."
In the case which was the occasion of these remarks Samuel Warren, a post- man, pleaded guilty to a charge of steal. ing two letters. It was stater by Mr. Percival Clarke. for the prosecution, that numerous complaints were received at the branch post office in Cannon Street of lost letters containing postal orders. The accused. who was employed there, was removed in June to another post offer, and the losses ceased. In August the man's wife was arrested on a charge of shoplifting, and was interrogated nbout the signatures on certain postal orders. She made a statement, which was real to her husband, and he confessed to staaling lettera. In all He admitted twenty-three coses.
