8.39

The Heavy Plant and Steam Sub-Sections are responsible for the installation and maintenance of generators, pumps, steam boilers, swimming pool filtration plants, oil fuel systems, autoclaves, sterilizers, compressors and mobile plant such as road rollers.

8.40

The General Engineering Sub-Section consists of the following :-

(a) The Machine Shop, which is responsible for all work associated with milling, turning, grinding and re-metalizing of components.

(b) The Fitting Shop, which is divided into components each responsible for the maintenance and repair of small engines, gardening equipment, hydraulic systems of special vehicles (excluding braking systems), laundry equipment, educational equipment, printing and post office machinery, air compressors and associated equipment, the rigging of all types of mast and the sheet metal and welding work.

(c) The Instrument Repair Shop, which is responsible for the overhaul, adjustment and calibration of recording and indicating instruments and gauges. In Hong Kong this shop also includes the Parking Meter Overhaul Shop responsible for the major repairs of meters, conversion to new rates and re-conditioning of casings, dump chutes and trolleys, and the Engraving Shop which carries out engraving work of all types.

(d) The Installation Shop, which carries out the erection, testing and commissioning of all types of mechanical plant and equipment including those associated with new projects when so requested by the Design and Projects Division. This latter work is undertaken subject to the work load at the time and the manpower available.

(e) A Drainage Sub-Section in the Kowloon Workshop, where there is a greater requirement for the maintenance of sewage processing and screening plant.

PLANT OPERATION SUB-DIVISION

8.41

This Sub-Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of major plant and consists of the following seven sections. The majority of these plants are required to provide a 24-hour year-round service.

Incineration Plants, Abattoirs and Compost Plant

8.42 The Kennedy Town Incineration Plant was in continuous operation throughout the year. This included the fifth unit which operated at reduced throughput until February 1977 when the unit was shut down for inspection and subsequent modifications to the supporting steel structure. During the period of this work the fitting of further instrumentation in the form of additional thermocouples and an oxygen analyser with automatic controls commenced.
