On the Mainland, the annual expenditure on street lighting increased by 38.6% from $4,728,000 to $6,554,000 comprising $4,761,000 in Kowloon and $1,793,000 in the New Territories.
Public Transport

The planning, design and improvement of bus stops, bays, termini, public light bus stands and other facilities continued throughout the year either independently or as part of road improvement schemes.

Part of the off-street metered car park near Tsim Sha Tsui Post Office in Kowloon was converted into a bus terminus.

On the Island, two off-street bus termini were planned to serve the Stanley and Deep Water Bay areas.

Expansion of bus services continued. This included the introduction of five new bus routes on the Island, special coach services on the Mainland and two additional cross harbour bus routes.
9.76 'Bus only' lanes were introduced in the Mid-Levels area on the Island, daily for the period from 7.00 a.m. to 11.00 p.m.. These covered Caine Road, Park Road, and sections of Bonham Road and Robinson Road.
9.77 Five new public light bus stands were established on the Island, while in Kowloon one was removed and another resited to improve traffic flow.

P.L.B. restriction and prohibition zones were introduced in Chai Wan, Shaukiwan and Aberdeen on the Island in connection with the traffic management schemes implemented for these areas.

To improve public transport efficiency, peak hour urban clearway restriction measures were imposed on the section of Des Voeux Road Central between Jubilee Street and Jackson Road in the Central District.

Detailed planning and design works for the traffic management strategic plan for Mass Transit Railway Works Stage I were completed and those for Stage II were well advanced.
