EH B-Your trick of putting the word "news" in inverted com mas, when referring to two whole columns clipped from a publication called 'Answers, touches our heart. Brother, put it there. Shake. As to why such a clipping was not "20- knowledged," why worry? We wouldn't lift such muck ourselves," but if we did, we certainly wouldn't acknowledge it.

THE MASKED BALL

FUNCTION AT VOLUNTEER HEADQUARTERS.

יין4

There must be a feeling of a little disappointment that the masked ball held at the Volunteer Headquarters last night was not more largely attended, especially considering that ts object was to augment the Hong- kong Fund for the War Devastated areas of France and that its 'promo- ters had worked hard in the matter of arrangements: The attendance was less than generally expected but nevertheless any amount of enjoy. meat was got out of the dance. The Aoor was 150 feet by 40 feet, made of hardwood, it being laid under the supervision of Mr. H. W. - Bhd. Music was supplied by the Hongkong Hotel orchestra. The dominoes. revealed good taste and attempts at originality though the effect was somewhat spoiled by little parties of dancers wearing the same pattern. Mrs. Matheson, who gained the first prize wore a very attractive red satin domino, while Mrs. Lucas, to whom the second prize was awarded who wore a dainty "Butterby" costume which was everywhere very favourably commented upon. The third prize went to a red and black. domino, which with a beard and mask most effectively 'screened the identity of the Hon. Mr. E D. C. Wolia.

An unusual costume was that of P. O. Lawrence, of H. M. S. Carlale," who was completely draped in bath towels, while attached to his costume were all the impedimentia of the "Order of the Bath," from tooth-paste to shav ing brush This belt was formed of two razor strops and he wore a sponge head-dress. Mr. H. W. Lucas made a dashing Dick Turpin replete in red riding coat and high boots. A very appropriate design was that worn by Mr. A. Souza, who adorned his black domino with advertise- ments for Devastated France. Mrs. J. A. L. Taylor was daintily dressed as a pierette. Mrs. Basil Taylour was costumed as an Arab lady and Mr. W. Ward as a coster. The judging was carried out by Lady Rees Davies and Mr. H. W. Bird, the latter acting in the absence of the Hon. Mr. Claud Severn, C.M.G, owing to indisposi tion.

The dancing was characterized by A certain amount of zest.

Gentle-

men unable to find partners rapidly paired off and a set of lancers gave quite an opportunity for letting off steam. Every dance was encored and the orchestra was very obliging.

In making the arrangements. Mrs. Hay had the assistance of Mr. Wolle, Lieut.-Col. Crosse. Mr. H. W. Bird and others. Mrs. Harsten was reponsible for the collection of a quantity of sweets which were on sale.

The Cabaret opens to-day at 3 pm. It will bave its "Everything' and "Everything Else" stalls as well as a chute.
