Captain H. E. Anthony, associate curator of the American Museum of Natural History, who had completed preparations for a scientific expedi tion to the Taland of Jamaica, left tfor the West Indies early in November, and will be absent for four or five months. His primary ob- ject in visiting the West Indies is to try to determine if those islands were once a part of the mainland. This is a question that has engaged the many distinguished attention of -naturalists, and the results of his expedition will be awaited with in- -terest.
In going to Jamaica Captain. An- thony will carry out work that has "been conducted in the West Indies by the museum for the past four or five years. It is believed that Jama- ica may prove to be the key to the solution of the origin of the entire land mass comprising the Greater Antilles. The work that has been done in Porto Rico in 1916 and in Cuba in 1917 has given rise to the supposition that the Greater Antilles of to-day are remnants of a former Antillean continent that extended probably from some point west of; Cuba as far east as the Virgin Islands.
The results of the expedition should help materially in solving the pro- blem of the origin of the West Indies, two concerning which there are prevalent ideas. One is that the ancient Antillean land mass was formerly connected with the Ameri can continent, either through the Isthmus of Yucatan, er at some similar point to the west of Jamaica or by a landbridge "through the Lesser Antilles connecting with South The other America at Venezuela.

The discovery of any great num ber of animal forms on the islands which can be shown to be descen- dants or closely related in any manner to the fauna on the mainland will tend to prove that the islands were once a part of the mainland, while the absence of animal forms having any direct relationship with the adjacent mainland fauna would lead to the belief that the islands have always been isolated from the mainland, and received their few animals as waifs carried thither on floating masses of vegetation such as come down the Amazon and other rivers every year.
