THE FRIEND OF CHINA AND HONGKONG GAZETTE. VICTORIA, SATURDAY, MAY 1st, 1847.
NEW SOUTH WALES.
The Sarah puts win possession of Sydney papers to the 3rd Ultimo; but on looking over our file we ree little of importance to parties in this quarter. The vice Admiralty court as
Bow constituted causes much dissatisfaction among those interested in shipping, and will probably be the subject of an appeal to parlia. ment, A large nugiber of American Whalers make Sydney a part of refit, while of British or Colonial Whaters there is seldom a vessel in the harbour, The causes which have lead to the discontinuance of this branch of our com- merce, are discussed by a Correspondent in the Herald--we will copy the letter in a future issue.
Sir Eardley Wilmot, the ex-Governor of Van Dieman's Land, died at Hobart Town. Lady Mary Fitzroy was recovering from a scrious indisposition. The Governor gives much satis- faction to all classes of the Colonists.
New Zealand continues quiet. We have ex- tracted an article relating to that promising Colony,
CANTON.
Our dates are to the 29th. The Chinese Merchants are much alarmed about the expect. ed arrival of troops and ships of war from In- dia, and continue to remove specie and valisa- bles to places of security. It is said, though little reliance is to be placed on mere rumour, that Keying has heard from Pekin by fire ex- press-that the Emperor is enraged at the late invasion that Lin is on his way to Canton- and that 2,000 Tarter troops were marched into the city on the 2811.
Our correspondent assures us that Captain Bruce did suggest to Sir John Davis the pro- priety of leaving a company of the 18th Regt.; and that His Excellancy agreed after the cir- cular for the public meeting had been sent out. When Captain Bruce appeared at the meeting,
he had no document to show that the com- pany was to be left, and in the face of his own official letter of that date stating the very up- posite, he could not expect that the meeting would destroy the letter of remonstrance. We, however, make the amende honorable for hav. ing doubted the correctness of Captain Bruce's statement.

The trick attempted is a very poor one indeed, and cannot escape observation nor will it pass uncensured by those he first libels and then would deceive. In supporting the government, he is not bound to slander his countrymen but if be does indulge in such objectionable conduct, an attempt to dis gurse it only adds to the offence. The Mor chants of Canton cheerfully concede to the press the privilege of opinion. Our correspon- dent Vandea speaks the sentiments of his countrymen when he denounces the atrocious

Now my only wish is for the eternal felicity of Paradise I die, but without regret; and Lexhort you not to fol- low any bad life. Each of you must do his utmost to fulfil his duties you must not be idle and doing nothing; any past lite has been scandalous and bad, but now I repent of it, because the doctrine of the Christians advices men to do good, to avoid evil, and I love our neighbours as ourselves. This doctrine is very clear. It does not allow a man to enrich him. self by unjust means, and one must not act wrong any how, for otherwise both body and soul will suffer. Chie must be attentive towards friends, and pay at- tention to their words and to their actious, if they are good we innst imitate them if they are bad, we must avoid them. This is the true prudence. The book Show says, that friendship with the good is like one going into a house fall of flowers--- after he has been accustomed to inhale their smell, he will no longer perceive their fragrance, friend- ship with the wicked is like one who enters into a foul place; after he has been accustomed to it, he will no longer distinguish the bad smell; but in the anwhile the corrupt effluvia will undermine his health and will ruin his body like a plague. Who then will not fear so great a danger? Now my life is like the fish in the frying pan, although still alive, I will soon be dend.
