The article of The Times of the 3d of January upon the Oregon question had also attracted great and unusual at. tention in and out of Congress, and was vieweil ns. expressing the sentiments alike of the British Go vernment and of the British people. The Wash- ington Union thus alludes to it
We call attention to the wholly new proposal which the London Times now calls upon the British Ministry to make to our Governmeet. It is reported that Mr Buchanan, the Secretary of State, is about to resign. Such a result has been predicted in various well-informed quarters during the last few months. Circumstances connected with the administration of Mr Folk, both of a špe-
cial and general nature, would seem to warrant the probability of Mr Buchanan retiring from the cab- "inct; but whether he will be sent abroad, or go ou the bench of the Supreme Court, or retire to Penn- sylvania, is at present uncertain

Alsodry and conrealpot enrage for goods. Victoria, Ini January, 1846,
The course to be taken by the American Go. vernment appears quite uncertain. Mr Polk is said
out of his difficulty; and he seems to interpret the leading articles of the London journals to mean, that our Government will give him the chance of com- fortably renewing the negotiations, and on terms such as will enable him to settle the business, with-- out incurring the gibes of his party.
The National Intelligencer says: We have of ten, and recently, expressed our conviction that Sir Robert Peel's administration does not wish for war with the United States. On the contrary, we doubt not it is truly anxious to avoid it. At the same time. it would be a great mistake to suppose that bluster ing declaration and prestige can produce any effect on its determination. Sir Robert Poel dare not, if he would, concedo anything to mare pretence, or submit to anything which would imply dishonour to his country, Lord J Russell has declared, within the last five and twenty days, that no Mi- nister of the Crown could meet the House of Cona- mons, having offered to the United States more favourable terms than those heretofore offered,'
"We do not believe this. We believe that there may be modifications of all the propositions here. tojore made by both Governments, and that the result of such modifications may be the establish. ment of a line of boundary consistent with the honour and substantial interests of both countries, But it must be évident to all that Sir Robert Peol's
position, as well as his own judgment, character, and reputation, will inpose on him a firm and de- cided, though we hops à moderate and conciliating course."!
The New York Courier and Enquirer supports the conecasion to Great Britain of the free naviga- tion of the Columbia, in order to obtain grounds upen which to demand, in return, the free naviga tion of the St Lawrence. He continues.
In the course of a recent debate in the Senate, it was stated by General Cass that the steamer brought no intelligence to this government which would justify any intermission in preparations for defence, but both Mr Calhoun and Mr Benton have declar- ed that there can be no war-and so the country willingly believes. Negotiations, it is anticipated, will be renewed by England, and that failing of a satisfactory result, arbitration, not war, will be the dernier ressort, To this effect proposition are now panding in both houses. In the Senate certainly that proposition will pravail, as it should in the bouse.
Under the uncertainty as to our foreign relations the business affairs of the country are not very active. Nevertheless prices of the great staples are well maintained. New or distant enterprises however, are not undertaken, and the bodinde uf ship build- ing and all other booking to uninterrupted peace are a good deal paralyzet.
