The Friend of China of 4th June contains a report of the proceedings against. the Editor in the Su preme Court for a libel upon His Excellency Ad Pret e 1. 1. Cochrane, l'he case was brought on by a Criminal information and was fried by the Chief Judge and a special Jury. The verdict was not guilty" and a very proper verdict it seems to be, for a more foolish proceeding, on the part of the Admiral, in giving greater publicity to the facts by prosecuting the Editor, we never heard or read of The whole manner in which the prosecution would seem to have been conducted looks not a little like an attempt to harrass and vex, if not altogether crush the Editor for his unpalatable remarks, and is not at all-pretty !→ We are rather surprised that the Officers of the Crown in Hongkong should have lent their aid to the proceedings,-but we daresay they did not act without representing the folly of the affair--if otherwise, we cannot have any great respect for their wisdom. Unless a person who has been libelled, or fancies he has been libelled, can carry the feelings of the public, with him to a greater or less degree-it is useless and a surd to attempt prosecuting, as it only propagates more widely and deepens the effect of the bl In the present case does any one, after reading the report of the evidence and proceedings, judge that Sir J.
