VICTORIA, SATURDAY, March 2nd, 1844.
We publish two acts passed by His Excellency Sir Henry Pottinger with the advice of this Legislative
Council. The first of these, "An Ordinance to defì- ne the law relating to Slavery in Hongkong" will be rend with interest, and obtain the sympathies of all men, the more especially, that the existence of Slavery in its worst form, and for the most infamous purposes among the Chinese in this Island, has been asserted. An Englishman aware of the stringent nature of the laws of his country, upon this subject, and the pecu- niary sacrifices she has undergone to wipe every ves- tige of Slavery from her Colonial possessions, will re- pudiate such a statement as a calumny upon his coon- try. Foreigners, however, are upt to give an unlimit ed belief, to anything, which may cast a shade upon this, the greatest effort of British Justice, an act of generosity which has no parallel in ancient or mo- dern history an act which many admice but none follow to them therefore, this Ordinance will offer cou- clusive testimony, that if slavery has existed upon this Island Lince its cussion to the British Crown, thạt slavery was not sanctioned by Government and the Bonder had only to appeal to the Colonial Magis- atisfied that such was the fact and if no- cessary to receive, aid and tection, We presuma a Chinese copy of this Ordinance will be circulated among the Natives extensively. They have lately had severo proof of their imteriority to Europeans in wartore in peace let nd also show them the superior- ity of our laws in hum
