I am sorry it has taken so long to reply to your telegram no. 285 about Lord Shepherd's visit, but there have been continuing uncertainties about dates and details which nave only just been resolved. One of those was whether Lady Shepherd would be accompanying the Minister but it has now been finally decided that she will not. He will however be accompanied by his Private Secretary, Charles Godden, and myself. Lord Shepherd and Golden will be arriving by FANAM flight no. PA 2 from Rangoon at 4.45 p.m. on Friday, the 31st. I shall be flyin, straight from London by flight no. BA 920 arriving at 3.20 p..

2.

A consequence of the decision that Lady Shepherd will not be accompanying the Minister is that he now no longer wishes to make the two days private visit to Singapore from 6 to 8 June. He hopes very much that it will be possible, without great inconvenience to you, for him to stay in Hong Kong and fly straight to Djukarta on the 8th by flight no. GA 983 leaving at 3.25 p.m.

Lord Shepherd's visit to liong Kong will be in the middle of a strenuous five weeks tour and he would therefore like it to be as relaxed and informal as possible. anxious not to impose too great a burden on your on time especially in view of the longer visit now proposed and wonders, for example, whether there might be the chance soon after his arrival of spending a couple of nights' rest in the New Territories, perhaps getting in one or two rounds of golf. Bearing in mind that you will have other guests at the same time, he would be happy to accept any private hospitality which might be offered in his programme.
