LORD SHEPHERD ATTENDS PRIVATE DINNER

Lord Shepherd, Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth

Office, tonight (Tuesday) was guest of honour at a private dinner given jointly

by the Financial Secretary, Sir John Cowperthwaite and the Director

of Commerce and Industry, Mr. D.H. Jordan.

Guests included businessmen, bankers and manufacturers.

The following is the text of the speech by Lord Shepherd :-

"I am delighted to be back in Hong Kong and to be your guest

tonight, especially as it has given me the opportunity to meet so many old

friends.

"My visit forms part of a continuing contact between the Foreign

and Commonwealth Office and Hong Kong. There is between us a constant

exchange of views and ideas.

"We for our part, both Ministers and officials, try to make as

many visits here as possible. And we know that many of you like to come

to London, and that, when you are there, you take the opportunity to let

us know how your thoughts are running.

"This week I am seeing something of what further is being done

in the fields of education, housing and other developments which have so

dramatically changed the face of Hong Kong over recent years.
